"rivers" of white space
sometimes, the spaces between words in printed text line up by chance and create white “rivers” that run down the page. striebel notices this by chance after many years of reading and became very interested in it. it turnes into a kind of hobby. he begins looking for shapes in the text, like long lines, tall columns, odd angles, and once even a perfect circle but he never manages to find it again. because these shapes appear and disappear so easily, finding them feels exciting.

striebel shares several unusual examples of these rivers in a 1986 issue of word ways.
