creative mind vs. critical mind
this reply from austin kleon’s typewriter interview with cartoonist tom hart made me pause and ask myself: do i have a critical mind or a creative mind?
my initial answer was: definitely a critical mind. did you ask yourself the same question just now? what did you think?
a critical mind focuses on:
- analyzing ideas
- evaluating logic and evidence
- finding flaws or inconsistencies
- judging whether something is true or useful
this description fits me, except for one thing: i’m not a very judgmental person. i don’t tend to think in terms of better or worse. what i might actually have is something closer to an analytical mind; one that is more about understanding than judging.
an analytical mind still breaks things down, examines structure, and looks for patterns, but it doesn’t always carry the same sense of rejection or evaluation. it feels more like observing than deciding.
in any case, tom hart’s advice touched something in me: i thought, yeah I need to relax a little, imagine possibilities, build on them, and give myself more room to experiment and explore.
